How Does It Work?
Phosphatidic acid is an important signaling lipid that plays
a role in a range of biological processes, including protein synthesis. It is a
major part of cell membranes and plays several roles in the functioning of
cells.
However what’s most important to anyone looking to build
more muscle is that phosphatidic acid has been shown to activate the mammalian
target of rapamycin complex 1 (more commonly known as mTORC1) signaling
pathway, enhancing the effects of weight training.
Activating mTOR For More Muscle
You’ve probably heard of mTOR – the pathway responsible for
protein synthesis and muscle growth. mTOR is a multi-domain protein kinase that
interacts with other proteins to form two main types of complexes: mTOR complexes
1 and 2 (mTORC1 and mTORC2).
Signaling through mTORC1 is much better understood than
signaling through mTORC2, and as such, it is known that it plays a major role
in cellular regulation, impacting cell growth (including muscle growth).
Signaling through mTORC1 is activated by hormones and growth factors, and
requires amino acids. mTORC1 can be negatively regulated by stressful
conditions, such as decreased energy (ATP) availability.
mTORC1 can also be activated by exercise. When we work out,
the fibers that receive the mechanical stimulus of an external load trigger the
release of phosphatidic acid inside the cells. Phosphatidic acid then binds to
mTOR and activates mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1), which causes the growth and repair
of muscle. If you want to build muscle, you have to activate mTORC1, and the
more phosphatidic acid available, the more amplified the effect on
intracellular protein synthesis and, ultimately, on muscle gains.
And now, scientists have discovered that introducing
phosphatidic acid via supplementation while following a resistance-training
program has this exact same effect on mTOR activation!
